Celebrating Thomas Bernhard’s 95th Birthday
“Steam whistles whistle! Wind west-northwest. Full steam ahead!”
Will the Titanic be raised?
Will Immanuel Kant conquer the New World?
And what does any of this have to do with a lantern festival?
To mark the 95th birthday of the great writer Thomas Bernhard, we present his grotesque theatrical comedy “Immanuel Kant” in the atmospheric setting of a traditional coffeehouse.Join us on a voyage through the mind, where pure reason collides with the spirit of our times. Old values encounter new notions of value.
Like Thomas Bernhard himself, Immanuel Kant struggles against the refusal to understand.
It is almost frightening how much Bernhard himself seems to speak through his protagonist.
The categorical imperative stands opposed to the categorical subjunctive.
When everyone knows that things cannot go on as they are, there is only one command: “Full steam ahead!”
“The world is what I make of it.”
